Tech Company to Create 242 New High-Wage Jobs in Manhattan's Flatiron District
State Supports Growth with $2.1 Million Through Performance-Based Excelsior Jobs Program
Empire State Development (ESD) today announced that Figma, a leading company for cloud-based design and product development, will significantly expand its New York City presence through a $14.79 million investment in its Manhattan operations. The expansion project at 27 West 23rd Street in the Flatiron District will add two floors to the company's existing footprint, creating 242 new jobs. This growth further strengthens New York's position as the East Coast's premier technology hub and adds to the growing cluster of technology companies choosing to expand in New York.
Empire State Development President, CEO, and Commissioner Hope Knight said, "Figma's expansion in New York City reinforces our state's position as a premier destination for innovative technology companies. This investment not only creates hundreds of good-paying jobs but also strengthens our growing technology ecosystem. The company's decision to expand its Manhattan presence speaks to New York's diverse talent pool, strategic location, and supportive business environment. ESD is proud to support Figma’s growth through the Excelsior Jobs Program and look forward to their continued success in the Empire State."
Figma Chief People Officer Nadia Singer said, “Since opening our New York City office in 2021, Figma has grown several-fold –– from a design tool to a product development platform, and from a few hundred employees to over 1,600 Figmates, today. We are excited to invest further in our Manhattan footprint to support the growing team of Figmates who live, work, and come together in our New York City office. With this contribution from Empire State Development, Figma will continue to add exceptional talent in New York, innovate across our company, and unlock new possibilities for people who design and build digital experiences, all over the world.”
Founded in 2012, Figma has grown into an industry-leading platform that enables global teams to collaboratively design and build digital products through its cloud-based software tools. The platform enables collaboration from idea to production, simplifying workflows and uniting teams across different locations and time zones. The company's comprehensive suite of products—including Figma Design, FigJam, Dev Mode, and Figma Slides—has become essential for product development at some of the world's most innovative companies. As the first design tool built for the Web, Figma Design has transformed how teams work together, while newer offerings like FigJam and Dev Mode continue to push the boundaries of collaborative design and development.
With over 1,600 employees globally, including more than 280 "Figmates" currently based in the New York metropolitan area, the majority of new positions will focus on research and development, strengthening New York's position in the technology sector. Empire State Development will support this job creation through up to $2.1 million in performance-based tax credits through the Excelsior Jobs Program. This growth will enhance Figma's ability to serve its substantial customer base, which includes leading companies across technology, media, entertainment, publishing, and enterprise software sectors.
Assemblymember Tony Simone said, "I'm excited to welcome Figma to the Flatiron District and applaud Empire State Development for this investment. Not only does this expansion boost our ever growing technology sector with 242 new jobs, it will add to commercial occupancy and boost the neighborhood as a whole."
New York City's thriving technology ecosystem continues to attract and retain innovative companies like Figma, reinforcing the city's position as a global leader in creative technology and digital innovation. The region offers a unique convergence of advantages including a rich ecosystem of established tech companies and startups, a diverse pool of world-class talent, and proximity to major customers across multiple industries. This dynamic environment has driven remarkable growth in the city's tech sector, as evidenced by recent expansions from companies like OpenAI, Duolingo, and StubHub, along with significant investments from high-growth firms such as Rippling, Rokt, and Quadrature. Figma's expansion adds to this momentum, further strengthening New York City's reputation as a premiere destination for technology companies seeking to scale their operations in a vibrant, diverse market.
